THE COUNTS
There's been lots of counting where I come from - counting of votes for they that want to be president and they who want to be parliamentarians. Counting of seats lost and/or won. Counts of "rejected ballot papers", counts of constituencies and percentage of voters that actually voted. Some even counting down Christmas. Counts of blah blah blah.

Well, some of us have just been reading. Reading newspaper reports (with the standard propaganda, lobbying, campaigning, biased journalism), reading statuses on Twitter, Facebook and other so-called social media to keep up with the process.

So after quite a nervous few days for myself and fellow countrymen (c'mon admit it), the results have finally come out without much brouhaha. Fair enough, there was the incident at Dzorwulu were voters surrounded and damn near tore down a house where ballot boxes were being kept overnight. There was the aspiring parliamentarian Victor Hamah was caught tearing down posters of her rival Ursula Owusu. Desperate, innit? There was the P.N.C. chairman who died in an accident on-the-spot when the motorbike he was travelling in collided with another vehicle. He was on his way to vote. The Tech Ayeduase ballot box issues. There were instances (even in capital city Accra) where Eletoral Commission officers turned up late. Then there are thousands of report from the length and breadth of the country about "minor" malfeasance. How minor is minor?

We can not even go into the malfunctioning "verification machines" or the voters who weren't allowed to vote on the special voting day - which was a few days before the general election - because we won't come to the end of it.

So after all the comic relief by Hassan Ayariga, the (non) fight put in by Dr. PK Nduom, the non-performance of eloquent candidates by Dr Henry Lartey and Abu Sakara, Dr Afari-Gyan made a pronouncement at the EC where tension was almost palpable.

The Presidential candidate for the NDC, Mr JD Mahama was voted for by 50.70% of the electorate. To be President of my country, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces you should have 50% + 1 (note:not 51%) of total votes counted. The NPP (and their Presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo) like a couple of sore losers did not turn up at the declaration. Rigged or not, Ghana is bigger than any political party. True that.

Congratulations to President JD Mahama.

When it comes to voting, I always plead the Jehovah's Witness. Go figure.
