CIVIC OTI

You may have heard of the “Snow Leopard”. He is the Ghanaian who risked his HBP and limbs to pursue skiing in an artificial indoor slalom in Milton Keynes. He went on to compete and challenge in competitions and marked up remarkable success in the sport. Amazingly, he may not be the most gifted individual even in his immediate family. His younger brother Civicis Oti arguably is. No, he doesn’t ski. When I had the chance to proof-read a few volumes of his “Of Kings and Lords” novel, I did not know what to expect. I approached the project in a manner not dissimilar to the way that a staunch Jehovah’s  Witness will view his first trip to a strip bar. I was disinterested and curious at the same time. (Is that even possible?) And so it remained, until I read the first two pages. It was UNBELIEVEABLE . I had known Civic Oti as a dreadlocked, sharp-witted, MSc-holding Entrepreneur who loved to DJ at house parties, so reading a figment of his creative imagination, I was blown a...

AYITEY POWERS IN BABYLON PART 2

…So when the Eastern European “gentleman” approached him and offered to sell him a top-of-the-range, ultra-modern laptop for half the RRP, I was surprised to observe that our boxing hero’s interest bone had been tickled. So as if led by some unseen force from some next dimension, Ayitey Powers was led like a sheep to the slaughter. The slaughter being a burnt-out 1980-something Fiat. The Fiat was where all the magic lay . We shall call our Eastern European Mariusz for convenience sake and because I just can’t keep saying/typing “Eastern European, Eastern European” like an idiot.  Well, he walked briskly towards the said car. It was business, nothing personal . Mariusz nodded to another Mariusz-looking guy in the stalls who was trying too hard to look like a casual, innocent by...

AYITEY POWERS IN BABYLON PART 1

I saw Ayitey Powers or someone of remarkable resemblance to him the other day. It must have been the real Powers because there are not many halfway-bald, peroxide-dyed heads in my neck of the woods (think a fusion of El Hadj Diouf and Solomon Sampah). The sight of the flamboyant, blonde bombshell – oops, I meant bomber - brought back some interesting memories of Mr. Powers’ time in Edmonton, London a couple of years ago. Once upon a time, I am so tempted to add: time, time. If you’re a Ghanaian reader, you’d understand the preceding statement. If you’re not, then let’s just carry on. Anyway, twice upon a time, in a far away land called Edmonton there lived a Ghanaian boxer of international repute called Ayitey Powers. While most Ghanaia...

21 Q&A SESSION WITH G.A.Q.(GERMAN AZONTO QUEEN)

Q&A SESSION ! 1 Tell us a bit about yourself. Hi readers of Lenny Briscoe II’s blog! My name is Lydia and I’m 18 years old. I was born and raised in Munich, South Germany. At the moment I am a student and I’m going to finish school soon. This might be hard to believe for everyone, but I am 100% white and not mixed race, just to make it clear. So many people think I am, because of my natural curly hair. [Laughs]. 2 I heard the mixed-race rumours. I think it’s not just the curly hair; it’s also because you’ve rhythm! Have you always been into dancing in general ? Yes. When I was younger I attended Hip Hop and some ballet dance classes. My mother has also been a big influence for me as she is a professional dancer. 3 That explains it. What else are you into? I really like photography and editing videos and photos. I am also a bit into singing and rapping (I’m not the best, but it’s fun!) Music in general is very important to me. What’s more, I like doing ma...

AFCON2013 HAIRSTYLE (S)HITLIST

Image
The AFCON/CAN has always been a showcase for African footballers for good reasons and bad. Scouts from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwean cattle-grazing pitch leagues troop to the tournament in their numbers to scoop new talent on the cheap. So how does a footballer shine in the hope of bagging a purse-bursting big money move? Talent, I suppose. But in the CAN , sometimes just raw talent is not enough. Unless you’re one of the few who can spot a nit on a gnat’s nut from 50 yards, it’s sometimes impossible to tell one unfamiliar player from the next without seeing the numbers on their shirts. [ To preclude charges of racism, I’m blacker than night] The very kind African footballes love to make life easy for the scouts so they use their head oops I meant their hair . The players that turned up at this year’s AFCON2013 did not disappoint. Spotting spectacularly horrific hairstyles, some of the players made Mr T look like Archbishop Desmond Tutu. [And I say “horrific in a good way]. Ev...
